Sins of the Flesh by Eve Silver

Torn between lust and loyalty...

The blood of the Underworld lord of evil runs through soul reaper Malthus Krayl’s veins.

Raised to fight for survival and to kill for victory, he can destroy anyone who poses a threat. As he searches for the one responsible for his brother’s murder, he refuses to succumb to any distraction…until his sworn enemy crosses his path and tempts him beyond all reason.

Calliope Kane, a Daughter of Aset, has a personal hatred for soul reapers. Their savage attack against her family still haunts her. But only Malthus can help her find the traitors of her kind, and only she can help him hunt the source of betrayal amongst the reapers. As they unite, the danger grows closer…and the passion between them ignites.

First off don't let the trilogy label fool you! I went into Sins of the Flesh assuming that this was the last one in the trilogy, that everything finally plays out and it would (hopefully) by one big HEA. With each page turned and the ending getting closer & closer I had a suspicious feeling that was not going to be the case. Too much needed to be unraveled with to few pages left, it was either going to be a rushed/abrupt ending or another cliff-hanger that as with the previous two Eve Silver seems particularly fond of. I was correct in the latter. I suppose I should be pleased with a continuation rather then an unsatisfactory ending, but oy! not expecting a cliff-hanger makes it all the more agonizing!

Don't get me wrong the main plotline ie: Who Killed Lokan? Is revealed in Flesh, while somewhat predictable (My guess made half-way through Sins of the Soul proved correct!) the story is fast paced and contains enough side developments to keep the reader enthralled. I must say out of all the Krayl brothers & mates. Mal & Calliope set off the best sparks! Just loved them as a couple! I couldn't get enough of their interactions and particularly loved their violent/amusing 2nd meeting!

So although we find out who kills Lokan, we're still left with many unanswered questions- How is Lokan different from the other Krayl brothers, how was he able to grown in power? How massive will the fallout of Suteka's betrayal be? Will all of the Underworld go to war? And what of his daughter Dana? Not to mention all the fishy-ness that surrounds the Matriarchs/Daughters of Aset... Gahhh! I need answers!!!

After a teeny tiny twitter whine of wanting more Otherkin (remember I was under the impression it was a trilogy!) @Eve_Silver was awesome enough fill in my clueless self that Otherkin #4 Body of Sin releases June of 2011! Great news, but regretfully, so, so far away. *sigh*

In a nutshell: By far my favorite of the three, the world-building was set with a refreshing take of the Underworld and Mal & Calliope a deliciously engaging duo you just can't get enough of. I'd recommend this book to all fans of the PNR genre, Eve Silver is a very welcome addition to my bookshelves! 4/5 Stars

Linger by Maggie Stiefvater

"This is the story of a boy who used to be a wolf and a girl who was becoming one. Just a few months ago, it was Sam who was the mythical creature. But now it is spring. With the heat, the remaining wolves will soon be falling out of their wolf pelts and back into their human bodies..."

Linger started off a bit slow for me, took about 8 chapters before it drew me in, after that though I was utterly hooked!

As with Shiver, the characters are written flawlessly. Linger continues with Sam & Grace's relationship trials, as well as the new ones of Isabel & Cole. With Sam & Grace, Stiefvater catches all the promises of a real 'true' young love so beautifully, you can't help but feel everything right along with them. With Isabel & Cole she weaves a path of budding love that straight away you find yourself rooting for them to connect. Relationships aside, the complexity of new wolf Cole himself, was phenomenal. The depth of his emotions, his pain is so gut-wrenching, for me no words can explain it really.

Through-out the entire book, whether it be Sam, Grace, Isabel or Cole time & time again I felt my heart ready to burst for them. The final few chapters are filled with such intensity and heart-breaking emotions. I can't express how much I love this book. Everything about it, the plot, the setting, but most importantly the characters. They take this book to another level, they're simply unparalleled & extraordianary!

Between the rivieting cliff-hanger ending and tumultuous passions, I am left yearning for the final installment. Forever (due July 2011) can not come soon enough!

Changes by Jim Butcher

Long ago, Susan Rodriguez was Harry Dresden's lover-until she was attacked by his enemies, leaving her torn between her own humanity and the bloodlust of the vampiric Red Court. Susan then disappeared to South America, where she could fight both her savage gift and those who cursed her with it.

Now Arianna Ortega, Duchess of the Red Court, has discovered a secret Susan has long kept, and she plans to use it-against Harry. To prevail this time, he may have no choice but to embrace the raging fury of his own untapped dark power. Because Harry's not fighting to save the world...

He's fighting to save his child.

I want to try and keep this review completely spoil free, (highly difficult when I often ramble through my thoughts) So please excuse my at times unlady like excitment, random scattering and somewhat-slight vaugeness of it all!

I think it is very appropriate in a brief summary, to borrow one of Jim Butchers most memorable line in this book, also my favorite: "HOLY HELL ON THE WHAT-THE-FUCK-WAS-THAT PARTY LINE"

While I've heard about the Dresden Files in passing from several people I had only filed it away as 'someday I'll get to them' after a trusty book discussion buddy of mine sang them praises as his favorite series ever. It was that extra shove I'd needed, to see what the fuss was all about, for me the series started slow and I just couldn't see where all the fuss was originating from, but as the books carried on Butcher's world built more vividly, the characters brought to life with more & more wit & charm I too was enthralled and quickly became a Dresden Files junkie, quickly flying through the remaining Dresden Files, leading up to File 12 Changes and...

Holy Shitz this book was effing made of awesome!!!

With Changes, Jim Butcher has outdone all of the previous books even my personal faves of Blood Rites & White Night, which I didn't think was possible. From page one your given a shock (see last line in cover detail above) that never lets up, 438 pages of non-stop goodness, that I couldn't read fast enough! Pretty much all of our beloved characters make an apperance (some disappointedly brief ie: MORE RAMIREZ PLEASE!) who either help or not help Harry through the darkest, roughest predictament he's ever been in to date that all leads up to the climax of the book as Harry reaches his final breaking point. In his attempt to survive it he does things that to me I felt was very out-of-character. Which is why I believe the book was aptly titled Changes. This jaw-dropping, adrenaline driven, masterpiece changes Harry Dresden completely and I think the Dresden world as we know it will never be the same. March & Ghost Story can not get here soon enough!

If you are completely new to the Dresden Files, I highly suggest starting with book 1 Storm Front. The world is steadily built up as it goes along and not meant for stand-alone reading. New readers would miss out on the full effect of the series and be lost at many points.

If your up to date, what are you waiting for? Read Changes ASAP! =)
